Education provides necessary information and skills to practice and demonstrate healthy sun safe behaviors. It is as important to teach your staff about sun safety.
As outdoor workers, they are a critically important audience for sun safety education, because of their long-term exposure to uv rays.
Incorporating sun safety into employee development doesn't have to take a lot of planning or extra time. Even a ten-minute reminder once a month lets employees know what they are responsible for, how to be good role models for other employees, and that the organization cares about their health.
Try the following ideas:
- Include the Sun Safe Colorado tip sheet in new employee orientation packets and on the employee section of your organization website
- Present the Sun Safe Colorado employee Training Tools at new employee orientation or annual employee meetings
- Every May, encourage employees to promote Skin Cancer Awareness Month activities
- Provide sun safety information at health screenings and clinics
Skin Cancer may be a risk management issue for many workplaces, especially those with outdoor workers. Across the nation there have been some Workers’ Compensation settlements related to sun exposure while at work. Whether your organization is concerned about Workers' Compensation, other types of liability, or health care costs, educating your employees is essential. Teaching them about risks associated with sun exposure and ways they can protect themselves from UV rays makes sense. Be proactive with your employees.
Sun Safe Colorado has created a variety of educational materials and trainings for you to use that are located in Get Resources. You can print out the posters, brochures and tip cards for your workplace and employees. A poster hanging by the exit door or near the time clock is a good reminder for your employees to be sun safe.
